HEATH SHULER: ALREADY RAISING TAXES

"We have seen how giving a tax credit to first-time homebuyers can work. Now, we need to take that experience and extend this tax relief to all American families." www.heathshuler.com

Heath Shuler showed a commitment to raising taxes immediately after being sworn-in: His first vote elected Pelosi Speaker and his second vote made it easier to impose massive tax hikes on the American people. (House Roll Call 4)

Also within the first 15 days of Democrat-control of Congress, he sided with his liberal leadership, voting for a $6.5 billion tax hike -- the first tax increase in 13 years. (House Roll Call 40)

As the Wall Street Journal put it: "This is a lengthy, complicated bill, but the central idea is simple: Raise taxes..." (1/16/07)

The Clear Cut Evidence

Fiscally Irresponsible

"I really feel that some of this wasteful spending, building bridges and roads to nowhere is a good example. No one likes to pay taxes, but with the tax money that does go into our government, we should spend it wisely. We should not put our children in debt."
Macon County News, 1/24/07
Heath Shuler voted to continue to waste hard-earned taxpayer dollars on pet projects when he voted against a proposal to impose an immediate earmark moratorium until both parties could come together to fix Washington's mess of an earmark process.  (House Roll Call 32)

Heath Shuler voted to allow up to 54 secret earmarks to be airdropped into appropriations bills at the last minute, adding a half a trillion dollars in increased spending to these already massive bills (House Roll Call 1044, 1061 and 1098).

Shuler voted for a down payment on the "Mother of All Tax Hikes" when he supported the Democrats' package for $72 billion in tax increases. (House Roll Call 1081)

Shuler voted to allow hidden earmarks to be tucked into the Democrats' SCHIP bill, despite his promise to be part of the "most open Congress in history." (House Roll Call 902)

By voting for the Democrats' $124 billion supplemental spending bill, Shuler voted for legislation "stuffed full of pork," according to Citizens Against Government Waste, a nonprofit, nonpartisan government watchdog group. (House Roll Call 186)

Endangering America

"Throughout this campaign I have called on Congress to get to work and secure America with stronger border protections. In Congress, I will fight to make sure our nation is secure and that we stop the flow of illegal immigrants."

Heath Shuler voted in lock-step with the liberal Democrat leadership to fund duplicitous pet projects over critical human intelligence.  (House Roll Call 117)

Heath Shuler continued to abdicate his duty to protect the American people and instead play political games by voting repeatedly to block a vote on the Senate's bipartisan Protect America Act.  (House Roll Call 116)

By blatantly blocking the renewal of the critical terrorist surveillance program, Heath Shuler prolonged the Democrats' payback to trial lawyers who are filing frivolous lawsuits against the telecom companies who fulfilled their patriotic duty by aiding the government in terrorist surveillances in the aftermath of 9/11.  (House Roll Call 73)

Heath Shuler completely abandoned his responsibility to ensure that our intelligence officials have all of the necessary tools to provide for our national security by allowing the terrorist surveillance program to expire, leaving Americans' security in serious jeopardy (House Roll Call 48 and 53)

Heath Shuler ratcheted up another broken promise as he put pet projects over protecting Americans' security when he voted against a measure that would have stripped all earmarks from a bill that was originally designed to enhance our nation's laws. (House Roll Call 1125)

The number one priority of Congress should be to protect the American people, but unfortunately, Heath Shuler is proving she cannot be trusted with this responsibility as she continues to play politics with our national security.  Shuler voted in lock-step with her liberal Democrat leadership to weaken our nation's intelligence laws and to reopen the terrorist loophole. (House Roll Call 1120)

Heath Shuler voted to jeopardize our national security when he sided with her democrat leadership to weaken our nation's intelligence laws and to reopen the terrorist loophole. (House Roll Call 1119)

Shuler voted to turn over United States homeland security protections to the United Nations. (House Roll Call 14)

Tax Hiker

"We have seen how giving a tax credit to first-time homebuyers can work. Now, we need to take that experience and extend this tax relief to all American families." www.heathshuler.com

Heath Shuler voted in lock-step with his liberal Democrat leaders to kill a motion that would have permanently eliminated the onerous marriage penalty and extended the $1,000 child tax credit.  (House Roll Call 83)

Heath Shuler voted against providing tax relief for over 20 million Americans, choosing the sham plan of raising taxes in order to cut taxes over putting more money in the pockets of hard-working Americans.  (House Roll Call 1183)

Heath Shuler had the opportunity to pass an AMT patch free of tax increases, but voted with his Democrat leaders to kill it (House Roll Call 1152).  Shuler then voted in lock-step with his Democrat leaders to kill a clean AMT patch, instead voting for burdening tax increases that will negatively impact the competitiveness of U.S. businesses and the American economy. (House Roll Call 1153

Heath Shuler had the opportunity to bring a clean Alternative Minimum Tax (AMT) patch to a vote, that would protect 23 million Americans from being hit with a massive tax hike on middle class American families, but instead voted in lock-step with his Democrat leadership, moving one step closer toward imposing a massive tax increase on middle class American families. (House Roll Call 1136)

Shuler refused to permanently repeal the onerous Death Tax, in effect voting for a $1.35 trillion tax hike.  Shuler's vote seriously jeopardizes family-owned business and farms, and destroys any hope for hard-working families to pass their livelihood onto future generations. (House Roll Call 959)

Shuler voted to impose another massive tax increase at the expense of America's hard-working farmers, threatening the jobs of more than 5 million American workers.  (House Roll Call 746)

Also within the first 15 days of Democrat-control of Congress, he sided with his liberal leadership, voting for a $6.5 billion tax hike -- the first tax increase in 13 years. (House Roll Call 40)
